Automotive Engineer David Chao goes through 25 things that we can expect from the new 4Runner.
- There won't be a V6
- 2.4L turbocharged four-cylinder for the base model, 2.4L turbocharged four-cylinder hybrid for TRD Pro/Trailhunter
- 4Runner production will still be produced in Japan
- SR, SR5, Limited, TRD Off-Road, TRD Sport, TRD Pro, Trailhunter models
- 4Runner should remain body on frame, but will switch to TNGAF2 platform
- Tail lamp design will change, more Sequoia style lights (horizontal lights)
- No more sliding rear window
- Instead the rear window flip open like the Sequoia
- Front design, it will borrow design from Tundra and Tacoma, more blocky look
- 17 inch wheels and 20 inch wheel options, maybe a 21 inch wheel option as well
- New gen to be a bit bigger than the previous 4Runner
- Full digital 12 inch instrument cluster
- Infotainment system will get upgraded, 14 inch screen like the Tundra
- Steering mechanism will move to electric power steering
- Rear seating to lose a bit of space for the added hybrid battery
- Transmission to move to 8 or 9 speed, at the very least 6 speed
- Panoramic roof is coming
- LED headlights on all models
- Grab handles on diver side
- Seat materials switching to non-leather options
- Suspension will be recalibrated to make it more stable, like the Sequoia
- Digital rear view mirror
- Door handles will stay mechanical, not electric
- It will get Safety Sense 3.0
- Exterior Design to be more retro looking to compete against Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler, more FJ like.
